The problems that adorn the world of politics in Indonesia are manipulative politics which tend to discredit political opponents. This article aims to examine Baitul Muslimin Indonesia as a wing organization of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP). This research was conducted using a qualitative analytical descriptive approach based on literature study. Primary data comes from books, journals and news. The theory used is Dan Nimmo's political persuasion perspective which includes the concepts of propaganda, advertising and political rhetoric. The results of this study prove that the existence of BAMUSI is a preventive measure against the many negative stigmas against PDIP. The propaganda practice carried out against PDIP is propaganda name calling. Even though it has a negative nuance, this propaganda is considered effective as a form of strategy to erode the credibility of political opponents. Nevertheless, the wing organization of this political party continues to strengthen the identity of its parent party. For example by making persuasive non-commercial advertising. And also the rhetoric of the PDIP's character is carried out without being negatively charged such as advisory (exhortive) rhetoric

Several works available on religion and HIV/AIDS indicated that several religious groups in the world, including Indonesia, are still reluctant to be involved in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. However, the involvement of the two largest religious organisations in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Moluccas Protestant Church (Gereja Protestan Maluku/GPM) in combating HIV/AIDS for the last ten years deserve to be investigated and studied, as new evidence which refutes the above studies. The result of this study shows, first, the involvement of NU and GPM in the prevention of HIV/AIDS showed the potential of religious organisations in health development, particularly as a progressive strength in the fight against pandemics such as HIV/AIDS. Second, the most fundamental forms of involvement are changing religious views about HIV/AIDS as a cursed disease into a disaster or a test that requires patience. NU and GPM also organise social activities, public education, and policy advocacy for HIV/AIDS programs. Third, although this article has not been able to present the decrease of HIV/AIDS prevalence in Indonesia as a result of religious organisations involvement such as NU and GPM, however, at least there have been some contributions from both organisations toward the decrease of negative stigmatisation to people living with HIV/AIDS

This paper aims to examine the fundamental concepts of da'wah in response to new media culture. Using a qualitative research for conceptual design, this study has found that the proliferation of cyber religious proselytizing leads the elements of da'wah have become ever-widening concepts. The concept of da’i, for instance, has experienced the reconceptualisation that not only refers to person who conveys Islamic teachings through religious sermon (khutbah), but also denotes to a creative content provider for da’wah purposes in the internet. Additionally, the power of preaching in the new media lies in the quality of message, that is, good, comprehensive and argumentative. Similarly, redefinition of the concepts ma'du, feedback, and other da'wah elements occur as response to digital media culture

    Get PDF
After Soeharto’s fall in 1998, a plethora of different types of media discovered ways to grow and expand in Indonesia. After Indonesia accepted the democratic political system, freedom of expression became part of everyday life. As pillars of democracy, the media are the tools par excellence for the expression of the people’s ideas. Established in 2007, Rodja TV started its own discourse amidst civil society. The aim of this paper is to see the involvement of Rodja TV in the civil society discourse for community development. To what extent Rodja TV’s discourse has involved the four civil society spheres - private, public, market, and the state - and how it pursued the creation of the exemplified community it promotes. This paper takes the qualitative approach and uses data gathered from observation, documents, and interviews. Apparently, Rodja TV has adopted a safe discourse by showing its propensity for mainstream Sunni Islam rather than taking the jihadi approach to politics that strives for the establishment of an Islamic state. Rodja TV’s main targets are localism and globalism but it is open to local values and selected expressions of modernism. However, it does not criticise the Indonesian government in fighting terrorism. While the station initially targeted a limited audience, because it broadcasts information about Islamic tenets, its public audience widened and members of Muslim associations, businessmen, and members of the government have become attracted to Rodja TV’s programs

    Get PDF
Salafi is a transnational Islamic movement. In Indonesia, the spread of Salafism is influenced by graduates from the Middle East. As a conservative movement, the Salafi community in Jakarta has been different from its early days. Today they are a movement that enjoys modernity and negotiates its ideology. This research aims to investigate and analyze the occurrence of glocalization on the global ideology of the Salafi movement with local aspects in Jakarta, and to what extent this glocalization influences the transformation of their dakwah media to localize their ideology for acceptance on a local scale. This research uses the theory of glocalization through media by Jan Servaes and Rico Lie. The first concept of glocalization through media theory explains it from a transformationalist perspective. Second, this theory explains hybridization in glocalization. Third, it explains globalization, localization, and cultural identity. The three concepts in this theory become a reference in research related to the Salafi da'wah movement in Jakarta. The results of the discussion and analysis of the glocalization media of the Salafi da'wah movement in Jakarta show that in responding to globalization, the Salafi community at the Nurul Iman Blok M Square Mosque is transformationalist. They hybridize their global ideology by negotiating the Pancasila ideology which is a local ideology so that the process of glocalization of da'wah can be accepted by the local community. Through the media, one of their preachers also hybridizes ideology with a display that represents local symbols by wearing a black skullcap or national cap that is identical to the Indonesian cultural cap. Salafi communities in Jakarta also hybridize their fundamental ideology with media products as global or Western products in the context of media glocalization

Photojournalism is one of the various channels to convey messages in visual form. It is a combination of images and texts that produces a single communication unit that reflects events and issues in a society. In the A8 section of Guo Ji Ri Bao, a Mandarin-language newspaper in Indonesia, dated September 25, 2020, seven photojournalism materials were discovered to contain signs and symbols related to Islam Wasathiyah value. This implied message indicated the media’s “agenda” in presenting reality or social issues, where the agenda typically corresponds to the ideology of the media itself. The media construct the frame of mind for their readers even with symbols and this study originated with the formulation of the main problem: “How is the value of Islam wasathiyah reflected in photojournalism on the Guo Ji Ri Bao newspaper viewed from the perspective of meanings and media?” An analysis of semiotics, structuralism, connotation and denotation based on Gill Branston and Roy Stafford's Meanings and Media perspective were utilized in this study. It was discovered that Guo Ji Ri Bao newspaper played a significant role in conveying the value of Islam Wasathiyah. This value is important to convey to all levels of society even through photos because it will be one of the ways to preach (da’wah) that lead us to a happy, peaceful, and harmonious life.***Foto jurnalistik merupakan salah satu saluran penyampai pesan dalam bentuk visual.
